In Story of the World, we are learning about Egyptian Pyramids, so we had a few activities that went along with that.
I ordered a pyramid kit from amazon and am super thrilled with it. We had made bricks with sand and glue and WERE going to make a pyramid with it, but our glue didn't dry. Oh well..learning experience, right?
So today, we learned about pyramids and what it took to make them. We used her science enrichment class knowledge to talk about pulleys, inclined planes and wedges. She just finished that class up yesterday so it was perfect timing.
Here is a link to the pyramid..it's well worth the money.
Pyramid
Here are some pictures from our project.
| Pyramid as it came out of the box. |
| Had to decipher the hieroglyphics on all the sides to know which side was the one that had the unlocking mechanism. |
| Some of the symbols are very similar so it took us a few tries on some of them. |
| We had to use a magnifying glass to read the inscriptions. |
| Using her chisel (or wedge) to chisel the bricks away. |
| Then the chisel became a lever to pry open the lid. |
| Full of sand that has to be chiseled away. |
| Raelee practicing her archeology skills |
| I FOUND SOMETHING MOM!!! |
| We learned why it is so important for archeologists to take their time and be very gentle :( |
| The tools she used to dig out the Canopic jars, the mummy, the death mask, and the sarcophagus. |
| The mummy fits in the sarcophagus. |
| Everything fits nicely back into the pyramid. |
We LOVED this project!!! I think we'll get many more hours of play out of the pyramid and contents.
After she got through with that, she got to virtually tour the inside of the Great Pyramid. Very very neat to do. Here is the link for that if you are interested.
