Meet the girls!

>> Monday, April 11, 2011

Welcome to our small urban flock!  We have 8 girls and we love them all.  Their group nicknames are "The Reds" for the Rhode Island Reds, "The Blacks", for the Barred Rocks, and "The Buff's" for the Buff Orphingtons.  I'll introduce them the same way on here.

This is Amelia. She's the darkest red of them all. She has very beautiful coloring.

Raelee named this one Lucy. She named her because she's "loose-ing" her baby feathers first.
This one is Ginger.  I wanted a chicken named Ginger..I don't know why....and this is her.
Here's one of our 2 Buff Orphingtons. She is either Sunshine or Honey. They are 2 weeks old. I can't tell them apart yet (Raelee can though). I suspect in about 3 days, we'll be able to tell them apart.
Sunshine or Honey in action :)
This Barred Rock's name is Gracey.  Named because she is more Grey/Silver than black right now.
This is Susan...Raelee named her. I think for the character in Narnia...her newest movie obsession.

And Lexi.....ahhhh Lexi.  I noticed right away that she had a cross on her head.  She had a rough start at life. I wasn't sure she would make it that first 3 days. She was a very very sleepy baby. She was ALWAYS approchable. Raelee loved her b/c she NEVER ran from her when Raelee tried to pick her up. All of the other ones run from her. She was telling me how sweet Lexi was and how she was always willing to cuddle.  When Raelee told me that, I started watching her closer.  She was hardly ever awake.  I said from day 2 that I thought she was blind...I wasn't sure though. I just knew that something was wrong with her. I hand fed her for 3 days. She now eats regularly on her own. I still wasn't sure about what was wrong with her. When we put her into the grass, she would just lay down and fall asleep right away.  My mom came to visit for a night (YAY!) and she confirmed what I suspected...she thought Lexi was was also blind. Now I'm sure she is.  So far, there are no problems with her and the other chickens...but Todd and I are going to try to come up with a plan if she is picked on, she will have to be taken away from her sisters.

She's incredibly sweet. If we get too far away from her outside (I think she listens for our voices), she cries and cries. When we come back, she quiets and lays back down and goes to sleep.  She's super cuddly and loves snuggles in the nook of your neck.

She's really funny...after everybody goes to sleep at night, she walks around crying and crying. I usually have to come back in and tell her that it's time to go to sleep now and she needs to lay down. She curls right up and goes to sleep. I just think she needs to hear our voices one more time.

The funniest thing she does is get lost in the cardboard box that we have in the cage. It's really funny. Sometimes it takes her a while to find her way out. Poor thing.

She's going to be a useless chicken...really...she's going to be so spoiled she won't be worth anything...lol But, I'm so thankful that she came to us. I really think that she will be special to us.  We have a lot of time and love invested in her and I think she'll return that tenfold.
See the cross?
If I sit in the grass, she walks to me and crawls up on me. It's very cute.

She can fall asleep just about anywhere.

Lexi and Raelee cuddling

Gathering them up after outside time is getting increasingly difficult. I'm sure we look like a couple of clowns chasing them around. It takes about 20 minutes to gather them all. Whew!

They are all adorable. I am so glad you invited me for a visit - it helped my spirits tremendously. I had a great time. Love them all!

How adorable! I love them all and I agree that Lexi was meant for you and Raelee and Todd. She will, I am certain, be spoiled rotten!
